There are moments in life when everything feels settled\u2014not because things are good, but because they feel final.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is just how it is.\u201d<\/p>\n
That may have been exactly where Moses was when Exodus chapter 3 opens.<\/p>\n
Moses entered the world during a time of fear and oppression. Pharaoh had ordered that every Hebrew baby boy be killed in an effort to control Israel\u2019s growing population (Exodus 1). His mother hid him for three months, then placed him in a basket along the Nile River\u2014an act of desperation and faith.<\/p>\n
That basket would eventually float Moses into Pharaoh\u2019s own household. Raised as an Egyptian prince, surrounded by wealth and power, Moses lived with a divided identity. Though educated in royalty, he knew he was Hebrew and felt the weight of his people\u2019s suffering.<\/p>\n
One day, Moses saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave. Acting out of anger, justice, or both, Moses killed the Egyptian and hid the body (Exodus 2:11\u201312). When the act became known, Pharaoh sought to kill him.<\/p>\n
Moses fled.<\/p>\n
The palace gave way to the wilderness.<\/p>\n
In Midian, Moses began a completely different life. He defended women at a well, was welcomed into the household of Jethro, married Zipporah, and became a shepherd.<\/p>\n
For forty years.<\/p>\n
No palace.
No prominence.
No platform.<\/p>\n
By the time we reach Exodus chapter 3, Moses is eighty years old, tending sheep on the backside of the desert. Whatever dreams he once had of deliverance or leadership likely felt buried under decades of routine.<\/p>\n
Life probably felt like it was what it was<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cNow Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Exodus 3:1)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Moses had lost his royal status. Yet it was there, in the ordinary, that heaven broke in.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Exodus 3:2)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The bush burned\u2014but was not consumed.<\/p>\n Many people might have walked past it.<\/p>\n Moses didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n \u201cI will turn aside to see this great sight\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Exodus 3:3)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Everything changed when Moses chose to pay attention.<\/p>\n He didn\u2019t create the miracle. And Scripture tells us something profound next:<\/p>\n \u201cWhen the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Exodus 3:4)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n God responded to Moses\u2019 initiative.<\/p>\n \u201cMoses, Moses.\u201d<\/p>\n And Moses answered\u2014not with confidence or clarity\u2014but with honesty:<\/p>\n \u201cHere I am.\u201d<\/p>\n God immediately reframed the moment:<\/p>\n \u201cTake your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.\u201d<\/em> (Exodus 3:5)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n What had been an ordinary routine suddenly became sacred.<\/p>\n Isolation shifted to destiny. God introduced Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob\u2014anchoring Moses\u2019 calling in covenant faithfulness (Exodus 3:6).<\/p>\n This was God\u2019s way of saying:<\/p>\n \u201cI am the same God. \u201cI have surely seen the affliction of my people\u2026 I have heard their cry\u2026 I know their sufferings.\u201d<\/em> (Exodus 3:7)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n God is not distant from pain.<\/p>\n He sees. And His awareness always leads to action.<\/p>\n God declared His intent to deliver Israel\u2014and then did something surprising:<\/p>\n \u201cCome, I will send you\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Exodus 3:10)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The God who comes down also sends out.<\/p>\n Moses was being invited into God\u2019s redemptive work.<\/p>\n Moses immediately questioned himself:<\/p>\n \u201cWho am I\u2026?\u201d<\/em> (Exodus 3:11)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n It\u2019s the honest response of anyone who encounters a calling bigger than themselves.<\/p>\n God\u2019s answer wasn\u2019t reassurance of Moses\u2019 ability\u2014it was a promise of presence:<\/p>\n \u201cBut I will be with you.\u201d<\/em> (Exodus 3:12)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n When Moses asked who he should say sent him, God revealed His name:<\/p>\n \u201cI AM WHO I AM.\u201d<\/em> (Exodus 3:14)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n God is self-existent. And He declared that this name should be remembered for all generations (Exodus 3:15).<\/p>\n Scripture comes full circle in Revelation, where the \u201cI AM\u201d revealed in Exodus returns as the conquering King\u2014faithful and true (Revelation 19:11, 16).<\/p>\n The God who speaks in the wilderness is the same God who reigns forever.<\/p>\n If you feel hidden\u2026 Don\u2019t underestimate what God can do when you stay mindful in the mundane and willing to turn aside.<\/p>\n Holy ground often looks ordinary\u2014until God speaks.<\/p>\n This message is part of a full teaching series where we walk verse by verse through Exodus 3 and explore how God still calls, sends, and reveals Himself today.<\/p>\nOpulence to Obscurity<\/h2>\n

He simply turned aside.<\/p>\n\n

I keep the same promises.
And I\u2019m still at work.\u201d<\/p>\nA God Who Sees, Hears, and Knows<\/h2>\n

He hears.
