What is Basic Trust?

“We can depend on the Lord to build Basic Trust in us, even when we have not acquired it as children.” (Elijah House Basic 1)

Basic Trust is the first and foremost of developmental accomplishments, without which succeeding lessons in a person’s life cannot be well learned.  Failure to acquire basic trust affects us throughout our adult lives, impacting our ability to relate to God and others.  It is the ability to entrust your heart to God and (within wise boundaries) to others.  It enables a person to keep the heart open and not to judge others.

As we grow, basic trust enables us to appropriately separate from our parents and learn to rely directly on God.

“But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content” Psalm 131:2.
