More Than a Date on a Calendar: Why August 10 Matters

Every calendar holds dates that mark important moments in history. But some dates represent more than history – they represent lives forever changed. August 10 is one of those dates.

Some battles didn’t end when the war did.

To many, August 10 is just another summer day, but for thousands of Vietnam veterans and their families, it is a reminder that the effects of war can last a lifetime. It is a day to remember those whose lives were forever changed by Agent Orange, to honor those we have lost, and to recognize the families who continue to walk this journey alongside them.

August 10 is recognized nationally as Agent Orange Awareness Day because it marks the anniversary of the first use of Agent Orange in Vietnam on August 10, 1961. More than six decades later, many Vietnam veterans and their families continue to live with the lifelong effects of toxic exposure.

As Rutherford County prepares to welcome The Wall That Heals this November, the Rutherford County Agent Orange Remembrance & Awareness Committee invites our community to join them in shining a light on the lasting impact of Agent Orange.

Together, we remember. We educate. We honor.

Because no veteran, and no family, should ever have to walk this journey alone.

Supporting Those Who Served: The Veteran’s Farm of North Carolina

At Father’s Vineyard, we believe in restoring hope and purpose, especially for the men and women who have served our Nation. The Veteran’s Farm of North Carolina (VFNC) also believes in restoring hope. VFNC is dedicated to helping veterans transition from military life into civilian life by helping them reconnect, rebuild, and renew their sense of purpose through hands on agricultural therapy, skill building and community.

Located in the heart of North Carolina, this working farm offers more than crops and livestock, it provides a pathway to peace and productivity. Veterans can find camaraderie, counseling and meaningful work in a safe, supportive environment designed to nurture both the soil and the soul.

If you are a veteran in need of encouragement, healing or a fresh start, I encourage you to connect with VFNC. To refer a veteran or become a part of giving veterans a new mission and America a new farmer, please email info@vfnc.org or click here to learn more.
