Board of Review

In Trail Life USA, a Board of Review is the final step in earning several ranks and awards, including Able, Ready, Journey, Ascent, and Horizon Trailman ranks, as well as the Timberline, Ridgeline, and Freedom Awards.  The primary purpose is to verify that requirements have been met and to provide spiritual encouragement and feedback on the Trailman’s experience, rather than to retest skills or knowledge. 

The process typically involves a panel of 3 to 5 adult panelists appointed by the Troop Committee Chair, ensuring that relatives and direct leaders are excluded to maintain objectivity.  The review is designed to be non-adversarial and conversational, lasting between 4 to 15 minutes for most ranks, where the Trailman reflects on his achievements and the board discusses the next steps in advancement.  Completion of the board results in the immediate awarding of the rank, with the exception of the Timberline Award, which may still require earning Sylvan Stars for full recognition.
